FYS

FYS class (Concerns General studies and helps us get acclimatized to university life) ·        Allows us to write and cite in MLA and APA format ·        While writing an essay or an article about a subject the Rhetoric part can be given importance and can make it more appealing for the professor to read and of course grade well. Keeps us aware at every point that writing does not only mean to provide facts and information, but it is about how we can make it more effective and adequate for the reader to enjoy and easily understand it. Unless it is engaging for the reader to read no information can become cogent and standard enough for taking it into consideration.

I have also learned to apply the skills and concepts learned in CAD 100 A/B in my Introduction to Environmental Science (ENVS-201). We have recently had to write a literature review with our group before we began our project on stormwater retention sites. In this we were each expected to write two pages based on two different reading that we found, which were strictly narrowed down to peer-reviewed articles. As most know these articles sometimes are not the easiest to read with the high leveled vocabulary. As I was finding these articles through the libraries one search and downloading them as PDF I would print them out. Once I printed it out I started highlighting information that seemed important about stormwater retention sites that I could use, once I was onto the second page I noticed that I had a lot of highlighting. I started to realize this was not helping as much as I thought. Then I remembered that in CAD with our readings, after each paragraph we were suppose to be able to s...

One of the strategies that I have learned in CAD that I have adapted to my other courses is read like a writer. This strategy has been helpful when it has come down to my Native American Societies (SBS-245) in which we have weekly primary source forum, picture essays responses due weekly. With this being due weekly we have to do three different pieces of writing. First we must read the chapter of the book which will help us with the quiz. At the beginning of the course we were told to rent or buy the textbook by the following week, with the complaint of many students complaining that the book was quite expensive even if meant renting it. The professor compromised and ended up publishing each chapter weekly for students via pdf. As I had already rented the book, as I had the thought that it would be easier. Once it came around time to start working on the assignments, I realized that it became quite difficult since the book was rented. I was unable to highlight or annotate on the side o...

CAD skills

In this blog, I will be writing about how I've used some of the writing skills from my CAD class in my MPA class. MPA is a class about Music and Performing Arts. In this class, we had a textbook, "Musical Theatre A history" by John Kenrick, which is a book about the musicals in the USA mainly focusing on the 1800s-2000s. While reading the text, I realized I was analyzing the text while also trying to read like a writer. This was a strategy which I learned in my CAD class. While reading like a writer, I could understand why the author made certain choices while writing and how it affects his audience. Reading like a writer really helps because it helps us borrow knowledge from the writer and use their strategies in our own writing. As you can see in this image, I have first tried talking to the text and thinking aloud. This helps me get a deeper understanding of the text and sometimes helps me predict the rest of the texts. While I was talking to the text, I could v...

In FYS class, I was assigned to do a presentation about African American culture. I could deliver the presentation well by following these steps. The First things I did was to look up “culture” meaning. I was not cleared of what components makes our culture. Through CAD class, understanding a question correctly is the first step to assess the answer, I have learned Second,  When I have chosen a resource of the presentation, I tried different key terms such as dance, arts or music. I could find a good source from the research. The technique I used for the research was to try different key terms and look at the beginning of the sentence if the source is interesting for me. Third, When I stuck writing on my powerpoint, I just write an outline. It helps me to keep thinking and writing.  Finally, at the presentation, I stand imposingly and say words without looking at my scratch paper.  Every moment I made this presentation, I considered about au...
